The Redcliffe Community has always enjoyed celebrating events, exhibitions and anniversaries. September 14th 2024 will be Redcliffe’s 200th birthday- it’s Bi Centennial. This year celebrations in Redcliffe’s `Wall of Fame` in the CBD’S Jetty Arcade on Friday 13th and `Redcliffe Remembers Celebration` in Corscadden Park on Saturday 14th, will surely attract plenty of onlookers.
In 1988, Redcliffe celebrated another Bi Centennial- Australia’s 200th Birthday. And the celebration was massive, thanks largely to a modest yet highly motivated schoolteacher at Humpybong State School, Margaret Just. She wanted to create an event that local school children , their parents and the rest of Redcliffe’s population would remember for the rest of their lives. And that’s exactly what she did. She devised, wrote, directed and produced `Salute Australia 1988`, working feverously in her own time for 12 months.. This event brought together over 6,000 local performing school children and over 12,000 parents and friends onto Redcliffe’s Dolphin Oval. But it did not only involve children and their parents. Redcliffe’s community members from New Zealand, Taiwan, Italy and Croatia all performed as did the Queensland Mounted Police, Air, Navy and Army cadets and retired Service personnel. The Governor of Queensland also attended. All of Redcliffe’s service clubs, Rotary, Quota and others contributed with much needed monetary donations to cover the substantial costs of over $52,000.
As Margaret Just said recently, “The whole of Redcliffe and District became involved with the project. And to this day everyone of the near 20,000 individuals who were there on that day, still talk about what a wonderful day it was!”
Margaret Just is listed on the wall of the Redcliffe Wall of Fame:
A collection of portrait and information honouring the achievements of individuals who have influenced and shaped Redcliffe. The collection is in the Jetty Arcade at 139-141 Redcliffe Parade.
